Ingredients
8 medium apples
8 tbsp sugar
8 dots butter , or margarine
cinnamon , or nutmeg to sprink on top
3 cup flour
1 cup shortening
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup cold water
2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp red cinnamon decorating candy pieces
1/2 tsp food coloring, red
Preparation
Mix flour, salt, baking powder and shortening in a large bowl until crumbly. Add water until rollable, use more water if needed. Set aside.
Pare and core apples, keeping them whole. Roll out dough and put apples in the square. In the center of each apple, put 1 Tbs. Sugar and a dot of butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmet. Bunch dough around apples and put in dish.
To make sauce, boil water, sugar, cinnamon pieces and red food coloring about 5 minutes. Pour on top of dumplings and bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour.
